Manchester United (0) 1 vs 0 (0) Middlesbrough FT
Berbatov 69
Prem, Kick-off: 20: 00 Att: 75294

Match Report

Manchester United gave manager Sir Alex Ferguson the perfect birthday present with their seventh consecutive Premier League win of the season at Old Trafford.

Middlesbrough always make life hard for the Red Devils and it took United 69 minutes to break them down, with Dimitar Berbatov delivering the only goal of the game for Ferguson, who will be 67 on Wednesday.

United had battered away at Boro's dogged defence without success until Berbatov relieved the tension for the English, European and newly crowned World Champions.

Cristiano Ronaldo found Ji-Sung Park in the centre of the Boro box. He flicked the ball left to Michael Carrick and, although his initial cross was blocked, the England midfielder knocked the rebound back into the centre.

Boro defender David Wheater failed to clear the danger with a downward header which landed perfectly for Berbatov to lash the ball right-footed into the net from eight yards.

It was a frustrating night for United and Ronaldo in particular.

Barged over in the box by Emanuel Pogatetz in the closing seconds of the first half, Ronaldo continued his argument with the Boro player as they left the pitch at the interval.

Ronaldo also went close on a number of occasions with shots from all distances and all angles.

His best chance was a glaring 22nd minute miss when he fired wide from ten yards at the near post after Wayne Rooney had picked him out with a pin-point cross from the left.

But Ronaldo was not the only United player to feel the frustration.

Rooney must also have wondered what he had to do to score, although in his case it was largely due to the brilliance of Boro goalkeeper Ross Turnbull.

With the first half moving into injury time, Darren Fletcher fired a long ball out of defence. Ronaldo headed the ball on to Rooney coming up on the left and he hit a vicious shot, which Turnbull superbly turned away at full stretch.

Turnbull had also denied Rooney early on when he palmed away another good effort from the England striker.

Turnbull did well to save further shots from Ronaldo and Park, while at the other end, United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was rarely troubled.

United's win now puts them seven points behind leaders Liverpool with two home games in hand- a position with which Ferguson and his men will be happy with as they enter the New Year.

Stoke City (0) 0 vs 1 (0) Manchester United FT
Wilkinson (s/o) 72
Tevez 83
Prem, Kick-off: 12: 45 Att: 27500

Match Report

Carlos Tevez poached a late winner to boost Manchester United's title chances and deny ten-man Stoke City what would have been a deserved point.

The Argentinian made no mistake from six yards in the 83rd minute - ten minutes after City defender Andy Wilkinson had been sent off for a second yellow card.

United suffered a blow when Rio Ferdinand was forced to pull out after the pre-match warm-up with Jonny Evans stepping in to take his place.

And Stoke almost got off to a sensational start with Ricardo Fuller squandering an outstanding opportunity after just 50 seconds.

Richard Cresswell's mis-hit shot ballooned into the air and, as the United rearguard hesitated, Fuller ran clear before slicing his effort over the top.

Stoke were being willed on by their fervent supporters and it needed a fine tackle from Paul Scholes to deny Fuller another clear strike on goal in the tenth minute.

It was once again Fuller who was causing problems minutes later when Edwin van der Sar raced from his goal to deny him after the Jamaica international had fastened onto a super pass from Rory Delap.

The sight of Delap, who had suffered shoulder problems, delivering his long throw-ins was another sign of encouragement for the home fans, who were raising the roof at a packed Britannia Stadium.

United finally landed a blow on Stoke's goal in the 25th minute when Wayne Rooney headed Gary Neville's cross straight into the clutches of Thomas Sorensen.

There were three bookings in rapid succession, Cresswell and Wilkinson for Stoke and Evans for United, as a full-blooded contest continued to boil.

United gradually began to see more of the ball in the final stages of the first half and Rooney fizzed one cross dangerously along City's six-yard box, before attempting to curl home a shot which was deflected away for a corner.

The visitors upped the ante at the start of the second half as Sorensen saved Tevez's effort and then produced a magnificent effort to deny Scholes.

Scholes had time to look up and pick his spot from 25 yards, but Sorensen took off at full stretch to tip the ball around the post.

But Stoke were in no mood to be forced back and van der Sar made a similar save to deny Fuller just seconds later before Danny Pugh headed a Delap throw narrowly over.

Sir Alex Ferguson brought on Dimitar Berbatov for John O'Shea in an attempt to force the pace, but Stoke continued to look the most likely winners until Wilkinson was sent off.

Already booked for a foul on Ryan Giggs in the first half, the young defender's inexperience showed as he hacked at Cristiano Ronaldo's ankles.

There was still no real sign of United breaking down the Stoke defence until the all-important goal arrived seven minutes from time.

Berbatov's excellent first touch created room for a shot and, although he miscued his effort, Tevez steamed in to ram the loose ball into the roof of the net.

Stoke City: Thomas Sorensen, Andy Wilkinson, Ryan Shawcross, Abdoulaye Diagne Faye, Danny Pugh, Danny Higginbotham, Rory Delap (Andrew Davies 74), Amdy Faye (Seyi George Olofinjana 89), Glenn Whelan, Richard Cresswell (Vincent Pericard 90), Ricardo Fuller,

Manchester United FT
UCL, Kick-off: 17: 30 Att: 35882

Match Report

Dimitar Berbatov failed to make a winning return to White Hart Lane and silence the Tottenham boo-boys as Manchester United were forced to settle for a point in north London.

Tottenham fans made their feelings known towards the Bulgarian striker who left the club in controversial circumstances in August when he made a £30.75million move to Old Trafford.

Berbatov was booed every time he touched the ball and the abuse seemed to affect his all-round game as he was well below his normal best.

The rest of the United team were also below-par and failed to capitalise on Liverpool dropping more points at home to Hull City earlier in the day.

It could have been a different story had both keepers not been at the top of their game, but Tottenham managed to continue their amazing revival under Harry Redknapp and move another step away from the bottom three.

Tottenham almost got off to a dream start on eight minutes when David Bentley fired a superb 30-yard volley which produced a brilliant save from Edwin van der Sar diving away to his left.

Tottenham suffered a major injury blow just 60 seconds later when Jonathan Woodgate was forced to leave the field and was replaced by Tom Huddlestone.

The change did not affect to appear the home side and Tottenham went close again on 29 minutes when Aaron Lennon raced unchallenged towards the United penalty box before firing a low drive which was well saved by van der Sar.

The rebound fell to Roman Pavlyuchenko who also saw his shot tipped over the bar by the Dutch keeper, but referee Mike Dean amazingly awarded a goal-kick to United - much to the disgust of the home supporters.

United were somehow hanging on and were lucky to escape once again on 38 minutes when Tottenham created the best chance of the first half.

Didier Zokora was asked to fill in at right-back after Woodgate's withdrawal, but he was doing his best to surge forward and played a superb ball into the path of Luka Modric whose diving header flew inches past the post.

United finally woke up after the half-time interval and Berbatov almost made a dream return on 52 minutes when he evaded the challenges of Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Vedran Corulka and broke free into the box, only to see a superb late challenge from Michael Dawson deny him the opening goal.

Cristian Ronaldo thought he had broken the deadlock on 53 minutes when he smashed the ball past Heurelho Gomes, but his close-range effort was ruled out for handball.

In an open contest, Tottenham had another golden chance to take the lead on 62 minutes.

Bentley's curling free-kick looked destined for the top left-hand corner but van der Sar once again showed his agility by producing a stunning save to deny the Tottenham midfielder.

Gomes had to be at his best on 82 minutes when he superbly tipped a shot from Ji-Sung Park over the bar.

The Brazilian keeper then produced the save of the game in stoppage time when he managed to tip Ryan Giggs' free-kick onto the top of the bar as both sides were forced to settle for a point.

After the match Spurs boss Harry Redknapp said: "Gomes was excellent tonight. Tony Parks has worked very hard with him in training and I think he's brought him out of himself.

"We've seen a big lift in his performance. People were wondering whether he was a world-class goalkeeper and I think now he's starting to show his quality.

"I've got confidence in him. Whether we bring in another goalkeeper during January is another matter. I'm not saying we won't bring one in, but if he keeps producing those types of performances then we haven't got a problem.

"We showed great character after Woodgate got injured and in the end I think it was a fair result. It was a good point.

"Any time you get a result against Manchester United you've done well." United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: "It's frustrating. I think we dominated the game, but we just needed a little bit of luck.

"Their goalkeeper made two fantastic saves at the end.

"But you have to be worried about the counter-attack that you could lose it also. (Luka) Modric had a terrific shot near the end that just glanced over that could have embarrassed us.

"Tottenham aren't an easy team to play, they're on a high at the moment. Since Harry has come in they've been rejuvenated.

"It's not the worst result but I'd have liked to have got an extra two points as that makes a huge difference.

"After the draws today you hope to take advantage, but now hopefully there will be a draw tomorrow at Chelsea."

Tottenham Hotspur: Heurelho Gomes, Vedran Corluka, Jonathan Woodgate (Tom Huddlestone 10), Michael Dawson, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Didier Zokora, Luka Modric, Jermaine Jenas (Jamie O'Hara 62), David Bentley, Aaron Lennon, Roman Pavlyuchenko (Darren Bent 54),

Two albums. Seven million copies sold worldwide. A string of hits like "I'd Do Anything," "Addicted," "Perfect," and "Welcome to My Life." A worldwide legion of fans who can testify to the power of one of the fiercest live shows ever to hit the boards.
At this juncture, Lava/Atlantic rockers Simple Plan simply seem to have it locked. So for their crucial third album the group could just head back into the studio and do just what's worked so well in the past, right?
Not quite.

Welcome to "SIMPLE PLAN," not just an album but a statement of artistic ambition and growth from the Montreal-based quintet. As you'd expect from any band that would call its debut album "NO PADS, NO HELMETS...JUST BALLS," the self-titled release is a fearless, without-a-net excursion into dynamic music-making, taking what we love best about Simple Plan -- the unbridled energy, the ripping guitars, the hook-filled melodic sensibility -- and incorporating a slew of inventive sonic approaches informed by new collaborators such as Nate "Danja" Hills (Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Duran Duran, Nelly Furtado), Max Martin (James Blunt, Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne), and Dave Fortman (Evanescence, Mudvayne).
The new equation yields 11 songs that are unquestionably Simple Plan but still sound unlike anything they've done before, from the loping synthesizer loops of the opening track and first single, "When I'm Gone," to the tight dance groove and R&B flavor of "The End," the hip-hop styled beat of "Generation," and the unabashed power balladry of "I Can Wait Forever."

"I think we all felt we needed to do something that would be a little more daring and stretch the envelope of who we are," explains frontman Pierre Bouvier. "We were just trying to make a record that will leave a little more of a mark."

Drummer Chuck Comeau adds that "there was sort of a realization we needed to shake things up and really take chances and just go for it. To do something that was still us but would challenge ourselves."

Change, of course, comes with some degree of apprehension, and the band doesn't hide the fact they felt a bit of trepidation as they began to explore the new territory of "SIMPLE PLAN." Consider, after all, what Comeau calls the "comfort zone" the group came from, which includes 2002's double-platinum "NO PADS..." and 2004's platinum "STILL NOT GETTING ANY," with 2005's "MTV HARD ROCK LIVE" documenting the group's aforementioned concert excitement. Simple Plan has been running strong since forming in 1999; most bands in the same position would be comfortable rehashing what brought it to this point -- and fearful of rocking that rock 'n' roll boat.

"We were scared," acknowledges guitarist Jeff Stinco, "because at first, we didn't want to mess with something that we already knew worked and that we loved. We could've made another record like the second one and it would've been well-received by our fan base. But the new stuff was so exciting to us, and you have to follow that if you want to grow."

Bouvier agrees that, at times, "we didn't know if we were on the right track with something cool or if we were just losing our minds." But, he adds, that was not necessarily a bad thing. "It's good to be scared," the singer explains. "You should be a little nervous. If you're not nervous, it's probably too safe. I think if you look back in the past, all the great records come from some kind of risk."
Simple Plan began working on the new album in the spring of 2006, shortly after wrapping up the touring cycle for "STILL NOT GETTING ANY." The expectation was for a quick writing process and equally speedy return to the studio for its follow-up. Bouvier and Comeau immersed themselves in the writing process and when fall rolled in, the band had assembled a pretty extensive collection of songs. But something didn't feel right. "Everybody was like, 'Yeah, yeah, this is great,' but nothing was sticking out as being really fresh," Comeau says. "We could feel that. We had strong songs, but they weren't really where we wanted to go."
At that point, the band knew they had to rethink their approach. A high regard for recent work by Justin Timberlake and fellow Canadian Nelly Furtado led the group to Danja, a young producer on the rise who had been thriving under Timbaland's wing for many years -- and who, coincidentally, had also targeted Simple Plan as one of the groups he wanted to work with as he expanded into the rock realm. So in April of 2007, Bouvier and Comeau found themselves in Miami -- foreign territory that started to feel right in short order when they came up with an initial pair of songs, including "The End."
Bouvier recalls that after that first session, "we were like, 'Oh, shit, we've got something really fresh here! We got stuff going on! This is what we've been looking for." The excitement and enthusiasm they felt was so strong it gave the band its second wind.
"We had this vision we should try to integrate some really cool, modern-sounding beats in the verses and then go into the big, soaring kick-ass choruses that we're known for," Comeau explains. "That was the kind of mix we had in mind and when we came up with 'The End,' we knew that it really worked. I think that turning point started to give us a lot more confidence to keep writing and take a lot more chances, even with the regular kind of songs."
Back in San Diego, Bouvier and Comeau started doing just that, enlisting the help of an old friend, Arnold Lanni (Our Lady Peace, Finger Eleven), the man who produced Simple Plan's first album. That creative chemistry they had with Lanni when they first worked together was still very much intact.
"Working with Arnold again was so great. He's an amazingly talented musician and you can tell he really cares about this band on a professional level but, even more importantly, as a true friend. We've always been very comfortable working with Arnold, and it was awesome to collaborate with him again," says Comeau.
Another trip to Miami soon followed, and Lanni was asked to tag along. That second session with Danja yielded "When I'm Gone" and "Generation," two of the most innovative tracks on the album. The duo solidified the rest of the band's support by taking the Danja tracks back to Montreal.
"We were a little surprised at first," remembers guitarist Sebastien Lefebvre, "but it was OK. I think we felt like we were adding a lot of new elements to our sound, which makes it more than just the typical rock band. I think it really inspired us all, and we came up with some groundbreaking stuff on this album."
Bassist David Desrosiers adds, "We all wanted to have a different record -- we knew that. And, after being in a band for seven years, you want to still be excited about the music you're making. When we heard those ideas Danja had it was like, full speed ahead..."

In June of 2007, the band was finally ready to enter the studio. Dave Fortman was chosen to help achieve the sonic fusion Simple Plan envisioned as it recorded "SIMPLE PLAN" in Los Angeles and Montreal. "He was the one who actually felt the most excited about the record and making this different kind of hybrid," Bouvier says. "It was important for us to have a rock producer that could really capture the way we sound live but that could also, at the same time, embrace this new direction. It really was a collaboration between the band, Dave and Danja" -- and later, hit maker Max Martin, who helped the group finish "Generation." "Everybody chipped in, in order to make this combination of styles blend perfectly and achieve the kind of record that we had envisioned."
Considering the final results, "SIMPLE PLAN" seemed like the title best-suited for this project.
"We feel like it really represents us," Bouvier explains. "At this point in our career, with two albums that have done really well, we have that confidence and it just felt right that this should be the self-titled one."
The musical experiments also inspired Bouvier and Comeau to pen some of their most focused and provocative lyrics to date. "Save You" deals with Bouvier's brother's battle with cancer. "What If" is a wideview essay, inspired by the TV show "Heroes," about changing and improving the world. And though the swelling "I Can Wait Forever" is an unconditional love song about Bouvier's current relationship, much of the rest of the album deals with dark and even bitter romantic tumult.
"When people ask me to describe our sound," Bouvier says, "I always think of it as angry, negative, depressive lyrics over really poppy, uplifting music. That's the way it's always been. This is just a really personal record. It's a record about how we're feeling, so that's what reflects out of it."
Simple Plan is now ready to take "SIMPLE PLAN" where the band feels best -- on the road. The group has rehearsed extensively to work the new material into live performance shape and is confident it will rock its fans just as hard as its two predecessors.
"I feel so strongly about these songs," says Stinco, "and I've believed since we started this band that a strong song always prevails. These are definitely songs we can stand behind and endorse, and I can't wait to play them live."
Desrosiers was equally enthusiastic. "I felt like I was 12 years old again when I heard 'When I'm Gone' on the radio," he explains. "It just sounded so... fresh. I don't think I've ever been this excited about the band. I don't think any of us have, really."

As I walk this land of broken dreams
I have visions of many things
But happiness is just an illusion
Filled with sadness and confusion

What becomes of the broken hearted
Who have love that's now departed
I know I've got to find
Some kind of peace of mind
Maybe

Fruits of love
Grow all around (all around)
But for me they come a-tumbling down (a-tumbling down)
Every day heart aches grow a little stronger
(Just a little stonger)
I can't stand this pain much longer
I walk in shadows searching for light (searching for light)
Cold and alone no comfort in sight
(No comfort in sight)
Hopin' and prayin' for someone to care (someone to care)
Always movin' and going nowhere

What becomes of the broken hearted
Who have love that's now departed
I know I've got to find
Some kind of peace of mind
Help me please

I'm searching though I don't succeed
(I don't succeed)
Someone's love there's a growing need
(Such a growing need)
All is lost there's no place for beginning
(No beginning)
All that's left is an unhappy ending

Now what becomes of the broken hearted
Who have love that's now departed
I know I've got to find
Some kind of peace of mind
I'll be searching everywhere
Just to find someone to care
I'l be looking every day
I know I'm gonna find a way
Nothing's gonna stop me now
I'll find a way somehow

What becomes of the broken hearted

Some kind of peace of mind

Match Report

Danish side Aalborg held Manchester United to a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford but Sir Alex Ferguson's side still progressed to the last 16 of the Champions League as group winners.

It had looked comfortable for the home side early on as Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez had chances either side of the Argentine's goal, less than three minutes into the match.

Ryan Giggs was given too much space in the centre of midfield and lifted a simple ball over the defence. Tevez was far more alert than the sleepy defence and reached Giggs' pass, scoring with a first-time flick past Karim Zaza.
More goals looked on the cards as chances fell for Jonny Evans, Nani and Rooney again, all in the opening 20 minutes.

AaB, to their credit, were happy to soak up the pressure - albeit unconvincingly - and then find the gaps left by the home side, with Thomas Augustinussen and Marek Saganowski missing the target early on.
But the goals were still a shock when they came, both of them against the run of play.

Nani had almost scored after being played in behind the AaB defence when, two minutes later, he gave away a free-kick.

The set-piece was swung in to the front post where Michael Jakobsen had made a clever run, untracked by the static United defence, and he was able to glance a diving header beyond Tomasz Kuszczak and into the far corner of the net.
The second goal, scored just before half-time, mirrored the first with John O'Shea missing an identical chance to Nani's before AaB went up to the other end to shock the home crowd.

Anders Due found the space to whip in a deep cross which Jeppe Curth nodded back across goal and, miraculously, past Kuszczak. It was a wonderful, curling effort which gave the match some much-needed spice.

It at least snapped United out of the rut they had casually worked their way into after their early dominance, and the second half began in familiarly promising fashion.

Seven minutes into the half, after Tevez had already missed a good headed chance, Rooney powered his way into the AaB area and poked a low drive past Zaza from 15 yards.

Yet, much to the frustration of the United bench, the reigning European champions couldn't push on to clinch the three points.

A Steve Olfers sliding tackle took the ball from substitute Paul Scholes' feet just as he looked ready to score, and Zaza made two good saves from Gary Neville and Olfers' deflected header.

In truth they were probably affected by events in the other Group E game, which allowed them to finish top, but they would have liked to have taken their chances and cruised through to the next phase.
